Question of the Week: Will high gas prices keep you from traveling for ...

This week's Question of the Week deals with high gas prices and holiday travel.

As the price of oil reaches $100 a barrel and gas surpasses $3 a gallon, will the American people hit the road for the holiday season?

AAA officials said Thursday that high gas prices will not deter people from traveling for Thanksgiving.

According to AAA, a record 38.7 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home over the Thanksgiving holiday, starting Nov. 21. About 80 percent of travel will be by car.

The Associated Press reported that Energy Department chief Guy Caruso predicts that gasoline prices, now at $3.11 a gallon nationwide, will climb another 10 cents by December.

While travelers will be shelling out more money at the gas pump, AAA says they will pay less for hotels, airfare and car rentals.

Michael Rivera Guillen had his head stuck out the window and was moving it back and forth, back and forth, like the pendulum on a grandfather clock. This was the 5-year-old's first time on a train.

"I wanted to share the experience with my grandchildren," said Rivera's grandmother, Xinia Durán Meza, who said it was her first time on the train as well. "It's enchanting," she said, "everything is so beautiful."

The Tren a la Tica is one of the oldest in Central America, opening to the public in 1903. It ran for the first time as an electric train in 1930 and is the second oldest of its kind in Latin America, according to train officials. At the height of the era, the train institute employed over 3,000 people. The train was shut down in 1995 under President Jose María Figures Olsen but finally reopened in 2001 with the help of a tourist organization called American Travel.

Dow, S&P indexes fall; Nasdaq ekes out gain

Wall Street ended Wednesday's session mixed as investors wrestled with a troubling outlook for bond insurers, a $9.4 billion writedown at Morgan Stanley and concerns that the economy is headed for recession.

Not all of Wednesday's news was bad. Morgan Stanley managed to get a $5 billion investment from an arm of the Chinese government, and the Federal Reserve said its Monday auction of $20 billion in 28-day credit was met with solid demand -- signs that there is cash out there to help the struggling banking industry recover.

But with just seven trading days left in 2007 and little data to convince Wall Street that the economy is on the upswing, investors hesitated to make any big bets on stocks.

"The sign that the selling is over is when bad news doesn't make stocks go down anymore," said Matt Kelmon of Kelmoore Strategy Funds.

Hardware High-Def Sales Tip Towards Blu-ray Disc Following Warner ...

The Invasion (Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig) was originally slated for a January 29 release on both formats, but now the HD DVD version has been pushed back three weeks to February 19. The Blu-ray Disc version retains the original January 29 date.

An even bigger delta will hit The Assassination of Jesse James (Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck), which will release on HD DVD on March 19, while the Blu-ray Disc will street on February 5.

Even older movies from Warner's catalog will see a staggered release. Twister (Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton) will touch down on Blu-ray Disc on May 6, with the HD DVD version on May 27. The late May release for Twister could grant it with the trivia of being the first DVD pressed and last HD DVD released from Warner Bros.

AIDS IN ATLANTA?

Statistically, it is about time that Hip-Hop be hit with another AIDS case. I'm not wishing for it, but I am simply stating that we've only had one case that I know of. With that said, Hip-Hop is doing pretty good on the AIDS and HIV tip from a celebrity perspective. (Please don't email me about how serious HIV is and how it is destroying the community. I KNOW AIDS IS AN EPIDEMIC and all the stats on it so 1) don't have sex if you don't have to and if you do 2) strap up.) Now, I am hearing there is a rapper in Atlanta that has been experiencing health complications due to the virus.
