| 'Almost An Evening' opens off-Broadway at Atlantic
The sardonic post-show goings-on at a restaurant Coen subsequently depicts might easily happen at one of the Chelsea establishments close by Atlantic Stage 2. Nimbly directed by Neil Pepe with effectively minimal sets from Riccardo Hernandez, these quick, clever plays are light in texture yet thoughtful in content. Certainly the afterlife Coen imagines for "Waiting" is memorably scary in its eternal tedium. Driven by Abraham's glowering God, "Debate" eventually suggests a variety of New Yorker-style cartoons. Del Pentecost and the ever-marvelous Elizabeth Marvel complete Pepe's group of expert actors who make the most of their sophisticated material. Despite its modest name, "Almost An Evening" provides satisfying amusement in a vein that sometimes recalls Woody Allen in his least pretentious mode.

Retro fashions no bargains
FORGET spare change, you'll be more likely to need your credit card next time you drop into one of Brisbane's "op shops" for a bargain especially if it's a retro or vintage find you're after. A quick browse through Red Hill's Salvation Army store yesterday was all it took to spot a pair of scuffed, metallic gold, '70s-style court shoes for the not-so-bargain price of $55. A faux fur coat, similar to one Tippi Hedren wore in the 1963 Alfred Hitchcock classic, The Birds, will set you back $50. And in the Endeavour Foundation's Paddington store, you can expect to pay $75 for an early 1980s Daniel Lightfoot suit. Retro and vintage fashion has never been in greater demand, and many second-hand stores are putting their prices up accordingly. With the competition increasing from private dealers and online trading sites such as eBay, quality vintage finds are scarce – and no longer a steal.
Help me get an angel in my underwear
The day that a member of the Colorado Rockies hit a World Series home run in a pair of men's Saxx underwear was a good day for Trent Kitsch. The 27-year-old founder and president of Kelowna, B.C.-based Saxx & Co. had just introduced his high-performance men's underwear to the market and was testing them out on some of his baseball buddies. "The players loved them and were wearing them every day," he says. Not bad for a line of underwear that started out as nothing more than an idea for a class project just a few months earlier. Mr. Kitsch played in the minor leagues shortly after university, helping him understand the importance of well-fitted men's underwear. Mr. Kitsch had come up with his concept for comfortable and functional men's underwear for a project during his MBA studies at the University of Western Ontario.

As the reality of David Halberstam's untimely death sank in, islanders and those who knew him through Nantucket remembered a life well-lived, and one that was tragically cut too short.
