The monster strangled me and I never saw it coming

A little while ago, I was driving a close friend, Nigel, to have a scan. He had suspected tumours in his lungs and his liver. "Obstacles," they called them, and marked the request urgent. He puts on a funny voice as he reports this to me, camping up the word. We both know what it means, obstacles to life, but have a silent pact not to say it.

We arrive at the clinic. Nigel disappears through double doors marked with a big red stop sign. I watch him go. I am in pieces but I smile, foolishly, for he cannot see me.

We have been in a clinic together before, a psychiatric clinic. It is where we first met. We are both childishly fond of telling the story at parties. "We met in a loony bin." People never know whether to believe us.

But when we laugh, they laugh too.

Matthews says Bush administration has "finally been caught in their ...

I realize we are poor, but the common man was a little more sophisticated than you give him credit to be. I suspect that many of them went along with the propaganda because if they didn't they might, you know, be sent away to re-education camps or be put in psychiatric hospitals and things like that. And trust me, there is nothing worse than a psychiatrist giving you an economic psychoanalysis of the virtues and benevolence of socialism and the greediness of unrestrained capitalism. But, let me take the opportunity to personally thank you and all liberals everywhere for the creation of our constitution, the eradication of the gilded age, and the invention of the internet. Poison prevention week set

Medicines, whether prescription or over-the-counter pain relievers and cold remedies, look like candy to children.

Depending upon the medicine, even one pill could be harmful to a child.

Although labeling requirements, educational programs and child-resistant packaging have had some effects in reducing the number of childhood ingestions, significant numbers of children are still being poisoned by ingesting medicines brought into the home by grandparents or visitors.

Poisonings have happened when youngsters have visited homes where no children live.

In general, all adults should use child-resistant packaging. In a study conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 23 percent of the oral prescription drugs that were ingested by children under age 5 belonged to someone who did not live with the child.

Hawkshead baby in a hurry

THE Hawkshead Relish Shop Christmas party turned to drama when a reveller started giving birth.

Puddings had just been polished off when pregnant shop worker Alison Townley's waters broke, signalling that her fourth child was on its way.

Designated driver and company owner Maria Whitehead said she knew instantly what was happening and she sent Alison's husband Peter get Alison's bag before driving from the King's Arms Hotel to the Barrow hospital. But the drama did not end there. As the trio entered Ulverston, they were pulled over by police for a routine car check, but were quickly waved through.

Alison gave birth to an eight-pound baby boy called Harry, just five hours later at 3.55am on Friday morning (December 14), which was fully four days before his due date.

Chip shop champions at Beaumont

STUDENTS at Beaumont School overcame real commercial problems such as fluctuating exchange rates, language barriers and finance shortages in a day-long business exercise.

Divided into marketing companies, pupils in Year Eight were challenged to win contracts for Spanish and German businesses, represented by language teachers, at the Oakwood Drive comprehensive on Thursday.

To win contracts to set up fish and chip shops abroad, the students had to design and cost company clothing, signs and packaging.

March of the wind farm in doubt on a divided island

If they choose yes, then unfortunately the windiest places happen also to be some of the prettiest places. And as for the islanders, they need to think on the nation's needs not just their own. They're happy enough to take the huge subsidies required to provide roads, schools, postal and travel services to their remote and uneconomical areas and to take the dodgy crofting subsidies but not to make a bit of sacrifice for the greater national good. .
