| With a Whisper, Cuba’s Housing Market Booms
Here is how it works. Imagine a married Cuban couple with two children and a baby on the way who find their two-bedroom apartment in the historic Old Havana neighborhood too cramped. What are they to do? Well, with the help of an agent known as a runner they might start by locating a bachelor from the countryside looking to come to the capital. They could arrange for the newcomer to move into a tiny apartment in Chinatown and move its residents who also have a house in Miramar where their elderly grandmother lives to a first-floor unit they sought in Central Havana. The Central Havana flat is available because the residents have divorced; so the former wife would go to the bachelor's country house, near where her parents live, while her former husband would go to Old Havana.
The season to be responsible
A lot of what's left after the festive frenzy can easily be recycled, including wrapping paper, aluminium cans, glass and plastic bottles. Recycling these items not only means less landfill but also reduces the amount of resources required to make new ones. According to Planet Ark, making plastic from recycled material uses 30% of the energy needed to make it from scratch. Recycling one tonne of plastic saves enough energy to run a refrigerator for a month. However, in your enthusiasm to give a gift to the planet, make sure you take a moment to check that everything going into your recycling bin really is recyclable. Heat-resistant glass (such as Pyrex) and waxed cardboard, for example, are not suitable for recycling. By including these items you can contaminate the rest of the collection and require it to be sent to landfill.
Edwards Camp: Hill Can Run, Can't Hide
On the heels of Barack Obama's landslide victory in the South Carolina Democratic Primary, The Political Machine contacted the Edwards campaign for comment. Chief campaign adviser Joe Trippi let it be known that his candidate will not be going gently into Super Tuesday's good night, talked about Hillary's flight from South Carolina, and those Clinton "Robocalls" that showed up last night. Let's see how the "grown-ups" do it. I reached Trippi on my crummy cell phone, and there was a whole lot of noise on his end, and I lost the signal halfway through and had to call him back, and my stupid pen ran out of ink, but here's what I got. The Political Machine: What did you think of Hillary leaving South Carolina as the polls were closing?Joe Trippi: Hey, she can run, but she can't hide.
House prices up 2.3 percent
Housing market research company Hometrack said house prices rose 2.3 percent on a year ago in January, down from 3 percent in December and the weakest rate since June 2006. On the month, prices fell 0.3 percent, the fourth consecutive monthly fall. The figures are not adjusted to take seasonal factors into account. The survey adds to a growing body of evidence showing the once red-hot housing market is cooling fast as past interest rate rises and the global credit crisis deter buyers. "Weak confidence among would-be purchasers continues to put downward pressure on house prices although the scale of the recent falls is relatively small when put in the context of gains over the last few years," said Richard Donnell, Hometrack's Director of Research.
Favre: Best football player ever?
Though he owns virtually every NFL passing record, won a championship in 1997 and is regarded as the ultimate ironman of a violent sport, he never has been bigger than he is today. There's a reason his No. 4 is the highest-selling jersey in a league of countless superstars. He's the guy having the most fun, the old dude with the most appreciation of what's happening to him. ``I'd be lying if I said it didn't feel great,'' Favre said. ``Ten years ago, I thought I'd be around forever and I thought we'd have the success we were having then. I said, `What's the big deal?' Now it's a totally different mentality. I hate to say I'm more appreciative of games like this or seasons like this, because I've always respected and appreciated the game. But the last two years, as I look back, they're a little harder to come by than I once thought.'' It wasn't long ago when his gunslinging approach wasn't amounting to much.
