A present that puts others in the shade

It's a wonderful leg. On mild-mannered Cottonwood Drive in Severna Park, Raymond Murphy's "leg lamp" shows off its fishnet stocking and black stiletto heel in the front window of his home. Shaded by black fringe, the thigh is lit for almost all to admire.

"I can't tell you what my wife called me," Murphy says. But it was said in love - just not love for the leg lamp, which has become a highly personal gift for fans of A Christmas Story. The 1983 holiday cult classic again airs for 24 hours on TBS beginning at 8 p.m. Christmas Eve.

Although It's a Wonderful Life and A Charlie Brown Christmas probably get more attention this time of year, A Christmas Story has cultivated its own following. Movie Web sites and message boards have sprung up. And the movie's centerpiece - its famous leg lamp - has become a cult fixture for fans.

Border Patrol Agents Fire Tear Gas Over Border at Mexican Attackers

A helmeted agent on the U.S. side said nothing as he stood with a rifle on top of a 10-foot border fence next to the three-room home that Arias shares with six others.

"We don't deserve this," Arias said. "The people who live here don't throw rocks. Those are people who come from the outside, but we're paying the price."

Witnesses in Arias' hardscrabble neighborhood described eight attacks since August that involved tear gas or pepper spray, some that forced residents to evacuate.

The Border Patrol says its agents have been attacked nearly 1,000 times during a one-year period.

Letter: Condolences from PSU students

Two Penn State University students dressed up as April 16 shooting victims for Halloween, and since then have received a tremendous amount of backlash. Below is a letter to the editor from the Penn State student association.

Dear Students of Virginia Tech,

On behalf of the student body of Penn State, we extend our continued support of Virginia Tech and the Blacksburg community.

Please do not allow the actions of two individuals to overshadow the outpouring of compassion that has come from Penn Staters over the last several months. These individuals do not represent the Nittany Lion nation and we fully condemn their actions, which in no way reflect the unwavering support from our student body for the victims, families and friends at Virginia Tech.

Our sincerest sympathies are with all Hokies and as president of the Penn State undergraduate student body, please accept my most sincere apologies and please know that Penn State still holds the utmost respect for those connected to Virginia Tech.

Vista should have been released 2 years earlier. (Possibly delayed intentionally due to expiring court orders regarding kernal code.)2) Vista does not optimize well, nor scale well for multicore CPUs.3) Vista was never designed for, nor intended for multiple GPUs. SP1 will not solve this problem either. This is why SLI, Crossfire, and multi-GPU-single card technologies work inconsistently at best and do not scale well.4) Vista is so overly bloated with Digital Rights Management DRM crap, which creates further performance issues, and hardware conflicting issues.5) Microsoft and the PC industry have not pushed for the adoption of 64 bit operating systems fast enough, and now we are hitting 2 to 3 gigabyte memory address space walls (usually dependent upon the amount of memory in your video card or cards.) SP1 will not solve this problem either. We can only hope that Microsoft will release Windows 7 Vienna on schedule, and that Windows 7 Vienna will have all the above problems corrected.Windows 7 Vienna will also need to be designed to work with new CPU-GPU combination chips like AMD's Fusion processor, and some of Intel's Nehalem processors. The above reasons are why the PC industry has stagnated.

Before You Go

Pack extra underwear. This is the only time you can break the less is more rule.

6. Pack a couple of plastic bags. They don't take up much space and are useful for separating wet or dirty clothing.

7. Pack toiletries in a plastic bag. Air pressure changes may cause breaks or leaking. Also keep in mind that bag handlers are not known for being gentle with your bags.

8. Think comfort. Take comfortable clothes that are easy to clean and care for. Pack comfortable shoes and only those that you have worn before. Traveling is not the time to break in new shoes.

9. Always pack a small umbrella – just in case.

10. Consider packing an empty lightweight and expandable bag. This will come in handy for purchases when it comes time to pack up and return home.

THEY like it spicy down here in South Carolina. Locals pour hot sauce on their catfish, on their grits, even on their greens. Their politics is spicy too. Charleston, a city with some of the richest and poorest people in the state within spitting distance, has a political scene "as gothic as New York City," a local journalist says. Some folks who live in the historic mansions in Old Charleston actually commute to New York regularly. Meanwhile North Charleston has pockets of desperate poverty, and there are people living in run-down trailers not far outside town.

The polls are open today in a state that has once again reminded America of its reputation for hard-ball politics. After all the antics of the past week, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards are in the hands of Democratic primary voters.
