Question of the Week: Will high gas prices keep you from traveling for ...

This week's Question of the Week deals with high gas prices and holiday travel.

As the price of oil reaches $100 a barrel and gas surpasses $3 a gallon, will the American people hit the road for the holiday season?

AAA officials said Thursday that high gas prices will not deter people from traveling for Thanksgiving.

According to AAA, a record 38.7 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home over the Thanksgiving holiday, starting Nov. 21. About 80 percent of travel will be by car.

The Associated Press reported that Energy Department chief Guy Caruso predicts that gasoline prices, now at $3.11 a gallon nationwide, will climb another 10 cents by December.

While travelers will be shelling out more money at the gas pump, AAA says they will pay less for hotels, airfare and car rentals.

Stores slash prices after online shopping spree

It was manic out there this morning," said Jace Tyrrell, spokesman for the New West End Company.

"Bargains are available that we haven't seen in a decade. Retailers have had a tough time this December so the sales are like a second Christmas for shoppers."

Yesterday's rush to the shops is expected to be surpassed today with even more shoppers turning out on what analysts expect to be the busiest shopping day of the year. The Next sale starts at 5am on Oxford Street, followed by John Lewis and M&S nationwide.

"We are extremely optimistic," said Andy Street, managing director of John Lewis. "We have fantastic special purchases and we have been helped by the hype surrounding the sales this year." A Timberland three-in-one cargo jacket will sell today for £98 - almost £100 less than usual.
