Survival Guides: Fund Managers' Insights

The market turmoil is forcing money managers across the spectrum to re-examine their holdings as they look for an edge.

Here are the views of five mutual-fund managers with specialties in specific sectors:

Emerging-Market Worries

Emerging markets were the belle of the investing ball in 2007. Now the music has stopped.

Howard Schwab, who heads Driehaus Emerging Markets Growth Fund, piloted the portfolio to a 42% gain in 2007. As of yesterday it was down about 17% for the year.

Mr. Schwab doesn't expect these markets to bounce back right away. "This is more of a trend change," he says, rather than a short-lived correction.

Mr. Schwab recently unloaded holdings, such as a Chinese milk company, amid worries that it wouldn't be able to pass along rapidly rising costs to customers.

Jonathan Takiff | Black Friday: Annual cravings, savings

READY, SET, SHOP! A 42-inch Panasonic plasma TV for $899 at Best Buy. A JVC MiniDV camcorder for $179.99 and Onkyo 7.1 channel home theater system for $399.99 at Circuit City. A Sony Vaio notebook computer with 15.4-inch display, 1GB Ram and 160 GB HD for $649.99 at Office Depot.

A Samsung laser printer for $49.99 and a Navigon 2100T mobile GPS system slashed to $99.99 - one-third of the original price - with a lifetime subscription to real-time traffic updates tossed in for free, at Staples.

Oh, and while you're at that last store, don't forget to ask for a universal a/v remote control - absolutely free, while supplies last.

These are just the sorts of come-ons that will have people up and running at 4 a.m. this Friday and standing in line outside their favorite store by 5.

Obama Beats ... Jesse Jackson

The assumption that the wealthy care nothing for the poor, and that the poor don't vote. The assumption that African-Americans can't support the white candidate; whites can't support the African-American candidate ....

Works for me. ... [The passage works for you or the "assumption" works for you?--reader M. The passage. I'm being non-snarky. Perilously close to swooning!] ... 6:38 P.M.

___________________________

Why does the crowd at Obama's victory rally just happen to look like a perfect, multiracial group of pleasant, idealistic, attractive Americans? I suspect it's because the crowd at Obama rallies typically is a perfect multiracial group of pleasant idealistic, attractive Americans. I've never been in a more benign-seeming group. They're clean! (And articulate!) Maybe a little edgeless.

Seed money

Venture money tends to chase the best deals, and perhaps investors are not finding enough good deals in Minnesota, Hare said.

Investing in medical devices is inherently risky because before the products can reach market, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must approve the technology and only after lengthy and expensive clinical trials. And even after approvals are secured, the companies must persuade insurance companies and Medicare to cover their products.

Too harsh on ex-wife

You're giving a perverse message to your children, that "family" is totally disposable.

Q: My daughter, 19, disrespects my wishes by letting her boyfriend sleep overnight, on the couch in the basement. I'm a single mom raising two girls alone for 15 years. I don't often ask her father for help, but he also spoke to her. Nevertheless, she still lies to me by denying that he stayed over - even hides his shoes and coat.

The boyfriend knows I disapprove. I suspect she's let him in and out through her screen window. She's in college and he's a college dropout who hasn't worked in the six months she's known him. They've also been drinking in the house, which I'm against. What can I do?

- Upset

A: Treat her like the grownup she's trying to be, even though she's using childish deceit to get her way.

Barbadian P.M. seeks historic 4th term

There are 30 parliamentary seats up for grabs in the tiny island nation of 281,000 people, known more as the playground of the British royals and birthplace of U.S. pop music sensation Rihanna.

A win for the BLP would give the 58-year-old Arthur, an economist who first entered politics as an appointed senator in 1983 and first became prime minister in 1994, another term in office.

Pollsters and analysts say the campaign has been one of the most intense in recent years, with some predicting a narrow BLP win and at least one giving the edge to the main opposition party, the Democratic Labor Party (DLP).

In addition to the usual mudslinging and name-calling, there have been allegations of threats by both sides. Don Marshall, a political science professor at UWI, complained this month that he was ''greeted with threats to my life and person'' while attending a BLP rally.

Wal-Mart renews its efforts for Southside

Wal-Mart officials will ask the Corpus Christi Planning Commission today for a waiver to resubmit their plans for a Southside store that generated neighborhood opposition. They also have deleted an oil and lube center from the plan.

In June, Wal-Mart officials pulled their zoning request for the proposed Supercenter at South Staples Street and Timbergate Drive a day before the issue was to go before the City Council. Zoning requests withdrawn by the applicant or denied by the City Council must wait at least a year before they can be reconsidered. However, the city's zoning ordinance contains a provision that would allow a property owner to file for a waiver to reduce the wait.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Sally Aiello said the company has opted to change the zoning request from an R-1B one-family dwelling district to a B-1 neighborhood business district instead of a B-4 general business district.
