PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 2008

Here is my Creators Syndicate column on the political landscape after Iowa and New Hampshire. I try to suggest in the first two sentences that things are very unsettled. "Five elections. Five winners." In both parties, we seem to have pretty firm factions operating. Usually there's a clear-cut difference between primaries and general elections. In seriously contested general elections, about 80 percent of the voters will vote the same way they did last time—about half of them Republican, half of them Democratic, with the proportions varying by constituency. With primaries, in contrast, voters are often all over the lot. They are not weighted down by party identification. They are ready to move anywhere.

Yet sometimes they don't. There is a very high correlation in voting behavior between the Clinton/Obama race in 2008 and the Gore/Bradley race in 2000 in New Hampshire.

Everyday Cheapskate: Blueberry stains zapped with vinegar

Of all my pet peeves (yes, I do have more than a few), I put laundry stains right up at the top of the list. That’s why I was so interested to read today’s first great reader tip. Blueberry stains are one of the most challenging. But who knew they also could be one of the easiest to remove.BLUEBERRY STAINS. My family eats a lot of blueberries and we get the juice on our clothes. I keep a spray bottle containing a mixture of water and vinegar by my washer. Whenever a blueberry stain shows up, I spray the mixture on it, and the stain turns pink. I throw it in the washer with the other clothes, and it comes out perfectly. – Kristen, WashingtonFREEZING PIZZA. The best way to store leftover pizza is to freeze it. Then when you want a piece, just pop it in the microwave. It is almost as good as the day you bought it, and it’s not dried out.

Scientists Make Human Embryo Clones

Scientists in California say they have produced embryos that are clones of two men, a potential step toward developing scientifically valuable stem cells.

The new report documents embryos made with ordinary skin cells. But it's not the first time human cloned embryos have been made. In 2005, for example, scientists in Britain reported using embryonic stem cells to produce a cloned embryo. It matured enough to produce stem cells, but none were extracted.

Stem cells weren't produced by the new embryos either, and because of that, experts reacted coolly to the research.

"I found it difficult to determine what was substantially new," said Doug Melton of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. He said the "next big advance will be to create a human embryonic stem cell line" from cloned embryos.
