| Mandan residents ask for noise ordinance
It's just too bad so many ordinarily pleasant people are getting so worked up over such a silly thing. Life is about more than fighting a bar and restaurant over a zoning permit. That's just the chance you take when you buy next to undeveloped land. " .
Moorman Clothiers ready for new home
MASON CITY — Moorman Clothiers knew about five years ago it was inevitable it would have to change location. That was when talks began about restoring the buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The clothing store is currently located in the City National Bank, which was designed by Wright.Owners Scott and Susan Moorman didn’t look far for a new location, though — just across the plaza."We’re excited to stay downtown and be in an old building," Scott said. The Moormans began looking at the building last spring and construction and restoration began last October. The building, which was built from area quarry limestone in 1884, is being restored to its original look. It will also include a rented-out apartment above it.Early work involved removing walls, the drop ceiling and limestone where windows once were."The big surprise was when we took the north wall out there was a two-foot-by- one-foot steel beam going through the windows we’re going to put in," Scott said.He had to contact engineers on how to remove the beams but still give the wall and windows enough support. They were successfully removed and the windows were installed this month.
Before You Go
Pack extra underwear. This is the only time you can break the less is more rule. 6. Pack a couple of plastic bags. They don't take up much space and are useful for separating wet or dirty clothing. 7. Pack toiletries in a plastic bag. Air pressure changes may cause breaks or leaking. Also keep in mind that bag handlers are not known for being gentle with your bags. 8. Think comfort. Take comfortable clothes that are easy to clean and care for. Pack comfortable shoes and only those that you have worn before. Traveling is not the time to break in new shoes. 9. Always pack a small umbrella – just in case. 10. Consider packing an empty lightweight and expandable bag. This will come in handy for purchases when it comes time to pack up and return home.
Teaching science, not 'creation science'
In November, we produced a collaborative project on the origin of life: a large bulletin board in the science hallway illustrating some of the major theories. As time passed, some suggested including intelligent design, the new and still fully unscientific face for creationism, as a scientific "theory." After a few days, it seemed imminent that about half of the board would be dedicated to creationism, rather than additional science. Throughout this process, I was the only active opponent to the addition of intelligent design or creationism. It seems that if not for time limits, creationism probably would have been included as its own "theory," made to appear equally valid as the findings from the scientific method. I have always been troubled by the cases around the nation of attempts to include intelligent design in biology classes as an "alternative" to the overwhelming scientific consensus of evolution.
December 2007 Archives
This is NOT something to believe in EVER, much less on New Year's Eve. Don't drink and drive -- it is a big deal. Make the start of 2008 as fantastic as you want the rest of the year to be. Much love and best wishes for a happy and healthy! XOXO Tracy .
